Anyone checked the iPod Games store recently?
Specifically, I am referring to the games that are compatible with the iPod nano (3rd generation and above), iPod classic and iPod (5th generation). The iTunes Store labels it as ‘iPod Click Wheel Games‘.
With iPhone OS 2.0 and the AppStore, Apple seems to have abandoned this camp. However, I was quite amazed to see a large selection of games and applications line-up for iPod users to choose from.
Make no mistake that these are actually quality games from big names like EA, Gameloft and Pop-Cap. Available titles include CSI: Miami, the ultra-popular Spore Origins, Monopoly, Bejeweled and Sonic: The Hedgehog to name a few.
I previewed CSI: Miami by Gameloft. The game looks simple and easy enough to get started with. Controls are entirely click wheel only. Your mission is to work with the characters from the show to investigate a dead body found on the South Beach. In order to achieve that, you’ll be using your click wheel to complete minigames and tasks like collecting and analyzing evidence, suspect interrogation as well as crime scene investigation. There’s also a hidden “Horatio’s Code” minigame which will be unlocked once you complete the story mode, adding a bit of replay value.
In total, there are currently 37 applications, mostly games, available. The only applications I noticed are three SAT Prep titles for reading, writing and math. Each of these titles go for $4.99 a pop, which is quite a bargain. A little eyeball on the comments area notes that everyone would love to see the developers/publishers lower the prices (or even make it free) of these titles, similar to how they did for titles in the AppStore.
If you happen to have any of the compatible click wheel iPods lying around, why not give these games a try?
