News of the next firmware revision, version 2.2, for the iPhone and iPod touch (collectively iPhone OS) has been spreading around the interweb. Greek iPhone site, iPhoneHellas.gr claimed that the new firmware shall land on November 21st 2008, based on their “very reliable” source. Gizmodo tipped in to say that iPhoneHellas is “reliable”, while MacRumors mentioned that they had very little experience dealing with news from the said site.
Here’s a run-down of what iPhone OS 2.2 shall feature:
- Safari shall now feature an always-on search field
- Turn off Auto-Correction feature when you don’t need ‘em
- Japanese emoji icons
- Line-in audio access via the SDK
- Google Street-View, Google Transit, Walking Directions and Location Sharing
- Rate the app before it is deleted
- Direct downloading of podcasts and App Store UI tweaks
It seems that Push Notification Services, which was dropped from 2.1 will not be seeing the light in this version. Another highly requested feature, cut-and-paste was not mentioned in the article as well. Gizmodo thinks that if the release date for 2.2 is indeed November 21st, then they would have probably frozen the major feature updates, paving road for them to appear in 2.3.
