I woke up this morning to a little voice telling me to “search for iPhone in Sydney”. Well, I will be travelling to Sydney next week, and what to do than to search for an iPhone 3G?
We all know that Australians are lucky that they are able to choose between Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin Mobile when getting an iPhone. Another carrier “3″ was not as lucky as to be able to offer the iPhone to its consumers and has since asked for their customers to petition for it.
I did a quick Google for it and managed to find out that its actually possible to get a pre-paid iPhone in Australia, via Optus. Gizmodo Australia mentioned that Optus have quietly decided to stop selling the iPhone with a pre-paid plan, two months after making a big deal out of it. Shoppers at Optus are told that “all new iPhones will now be on contract” when they enquired for a pre-paid iPhone. Info over at the Optus website has seemed to disappear as well.
However, bad news aside, as Gizmodo Australia updated later with a statement from Optus that buyers can indeed still pick up pre-paid iPhones, but only at the Optus Store near George Street, Sydney. It seems that this as has something to do with their inventory.
Not sure how true are all the sources, as there are currently many contradicting reports and comments from readers. However, the Optus Store at George Street is only a few blocks away from the Apple Store. And its is also a few blocks further away from the hotel that I would be staying. I’ll be travelling with Lady Luck over to Sydney, let’s hope that the offer is still there when I check it out.
