Apple has finally released the rumored update for the iPhone and iPod touch. The firmware is currently tagged as 2.2/5G77 for the iPhone/iPod touch 1G and 2.2/5G77a for the iPod touch 2G. The update which weighs in at about 246MB can be downloaded and installed via iTunes.
The update includes additional new features and bug fixes, some of which are highlighted below:
- Enhanced Google Maps, including Google Street View, public transit and walking directions
- Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
- Enhanced Mail application, which fixes the scheduled mail fetching issue, and improves on wide HTML email formatting
- Direct download of podcasts in iTunes via Wi-Fi and cellular network
- Improved stability and performance on Safari
- Improved sound quality in Visual Voicemail messages
- Home button now displays the first Home screen when pressed in any Home screen
- Ability to turn on/off the auto-correction feature
- Emoji characters support for Japanese customers (troubleshooting, technote)
- Rate the app before it is deleted
- Security updates
Looks like this update delivered on most of what we’d expect over the past weeks. However, it seems that the Google Street View feature seems to be crippled on the iPod touch. Cut and paste is not there too. Also not in this update is the Push Notification Service which was announced in WWDC 2008. Oh, Steve?
If you are using an unlocked or jailbroken iPhone (and iPod touch), I’d suggest that you wait a while longer for new patches and hacks to be released for this update.
