Next to jump onto the “app store” concept is none other than one-time-behemoth, Palm.
I have just received an email from PalmGear, announcing the excitement of an exclusive first look at the Palm App Store. According to PalmGear, the App Store servers just gone live tonight in time for the holidays. As a long time Palm OS user, I know the existence of a number of software store, like Handango, PalmGear and Mobihand.
Palm’s App Store is basically a mobile extension to the current Palm Software Connection portal. A user needs to only download a 6.6KB file (Palm OS) to get started. Windows Mobile uses are also welcomed to download the 1.1MB installer. About 25 Palm devices, from Centro until the very latest Treo Pro are supported.
What really amazes me is the mentioning of about 5,000 apps and games currently, of which 1,000 of them are free. If I recall correctly, PalmGear used to have a counter that states how many apps are available for the Palm OS platform. The screenshot below shows about 32,257 titles submitted so far. If my calculations are correct, does that mean that only about 15% of those are still active?
Celebrating the launch is a 25% discount for all titles downloaded via the Palm App Store. Remember to enter coupon code SHOPMOBILE during checkout.
