Free App Recommendations iTunes Freebies of the Week – 05 January 2009

iPod touch GeniusEver since I got my iPod touch, I have been scouring the iTunes App Store, looking for stuff to download and try. I currently have about 120 application titles in iTunes (not all are synced into the iPod touch) and about 25% of them are games.

As promised, following is a list of games that I got for FREE and are worth keeping.

Cannon ChallengeCannon Challenge – One of the first games I got for my device, because its free. The premise is simple, set the firing elevation and velocity of your super-secret non-line-of-sight (NLOS) weapon and watch as targets get blowned into smithereens. You get 15 shots for each level. Unused shots count as bonus. Finish all 15 levels and repeat again. Since targets always appear at random locations, there’s a very high replay value here. A must have title for every iPhone or iPod touch owner! Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

DartsDarts – Play the Darts game on your iPhone or iPod touch, anywhere! Use the flick or throw method to send your dart onto the bullseye. Choose from either the X01 or Cricket scoring methods. Make sure your screen has a screen protector on to ensure a smoother flick/throw. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps

Done DrinkingDone Drinking – This unique game makes full use of the accelerometer found in your iPhone. Help our buddy ‘drink and walk’ a straight line by tilting the device left or right. You’ll want to improve your stats over and over again once you start playing. I basically have to yank my iPod touch from my colleagues to get them to stop! Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

DuckDuckDuckDuckDuckDuck – Here’s another title which makes full use of the accelerometer. Tilt your device and help move the ducklings into the hot spots. More ducklings appear as each level increases. Game features very beautifully rendered moving water, rain drops, snow (yes, snow!) and cloud reflections. You gotta see it to believe it. Note that this game is currently going at $0.99 each; I got my copy when it was offered for free. :) Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

ESPN CameramanESPN Cameraman – Find the difference between two almost similar images. It’s as simple as that, but as addictive as McSundae. Your only challenge would be to find all five difference within the time limit given or its game over. The game features high quality imagery taken by ESPN camera crew from various sporting events like NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and more. Once you hit game over, compare your score against others via the built-in Online Leaderboard. You’ll swear that you’ll beat the guy on top during your next round of play. Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

Lightsaber UnleashedLightsaber Unleashed – Star Wars fans will want to have this as their first iPhone app. Swing your iPhone like a lightsaber, thanks to the built-in accelerometer. Features authentic sound effects from the movies. Swings and hits are detected accordingly. Add music from the movies and this is a complete package. This title was launched in celebration of The Force Unleashed game. Characters from the game are featured here, complete with their individual bios and lightsaber designs. For hardcore fans only: create and play as your own customisable Jedi character, complete with picture and customisable lightsaber color. Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

MazeFingerMazeFinger – This one’s unique. Use your fingers and trace according to the maze. Proof the power of your fingers by racing quickly towards the exit, while avoiding obstacles. Features incredible special effects and colorful explosive visuals. Brag among friends and colleagues with the achievement feature. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps

PapiJumpPapiJump – One of the simplest games but with very high addictive features. Tilt the device and help Papi jump to higher levels. Game is over when Papi falls to his doom. You’ll want to improve your high score over and over again. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps

TapDefenseTapDefense – Basically a tower defense game with elements of fantasy. Built and place towers of various destruction at strategic locations and see the fruits of your labor when those pesky monsters get squashed to pieces. Each kill earns you a number of gold pieces, with an added interest bonus upon completing a wave. Survive thru 42 levels of gameplay over 5 different game modes. Rating: 4.5/5.0 Taps

Tap Tap RevengeTap Tap Revenge – Rock Band for your iPhone, or something similar. Tap through the beats and shake your device as the beads fall. Download more tracks from within the game once you are done mastering the built-in ones. The developer prides itself by offering free featured tracks on a weekly basis. If you fancy online play, this game has it. Challenge friends and strangers and the neighbour’s kitten. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps
P/S: If you like this, try the other two paid titles: Tap Tap Dance ($4.99), Nine Inch Nails Revenge ($4.99)

ToppleTopple – Unique combination of Tetris and Jenga. Your objective is to stack and balance a number of weird shapes as highly as possible. Tilt the device to avoid your tower from toppling head over heels to their oblivion. One of the first games to offer multi-touch dragging, rotating and dropping. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps

Touch HockeyTouch Hockey – This air hockey game is one of the best available so far. It features one of the smoothest animations and also very authentic sound effects! Heck, the Instant Replay feature is there to insult your weak defenses! Once you are done playing with the CPU, go look around for a friend and challenge them to a Wi-Fi game. The only problem I have with this game is its requirement to connect to the internet (calling home, perhaps) upon first launch. Rating: 4.0/5.0 Taps

Check out the screenshots for each title mentioned above. Remember, these titles are free when I ‘purchased’ them, the prices may fluctuate and change as and when the developers decide to. Find more games for your device via the iTunes Store, here.
