That’s right. Here’s another one that claims to enable Emoji, systemwide! Try Spell Number by Water Lou.

However, the app doesn’t enable emoji instantly. You’ll need to do some hardwork – type in 9876543.21 into the application.

Once done, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards > Japanese. A new option for Emoji should now appear. Turn it on and enjoy! A friend of mine verified this to be working on her 2G iPod touch with firmware 2.2.1.
