I was given the priviledge to review Proporta‘s latest offerings for the iPod touch 2G. The always helpful guys (and gals) over at Proporta shipped two iPod touch casings which arrived at my doorstep a week and a half later.
First up is the Aluminium Lined Leather Case. Made of high quality leather (looks and smells very nice too!) and hand-crafted to the exact cut-out of the iPod touch 2G, this casing fits and protects your device from the dangers of crushing and impact shocks. Featuring Proporta’s trademarked ‘Screen Saver System’, the flip cover comes with a sheet of rigid and lightweight aircraft grade aliminium that helps protect the iPod touch’s screen.
The case comes in four colors for the choosing – Black, Teal, Mulberry and Chocolate. Proporta shipped me the teal one and I’d say that it is pleasing to the eyes. Utilizing a secure magnetic closure system, the cover opens and closes firmly with a snap. Branding-wise, the words Proporta is featured on both sides of the front cover – one on a silver plague and another via the see thru aluminium sheet.
It doesn’t take much effort to put my iPod touch 2G into the slip-in casing. You’ll soon notice a larger gap on the left side of the casing, this gives easier access to the 2G’s volume control buttons. Also, if you check the bottom part of the casing, you’ll notice that the cut-out is swayed towards the right side. Again, this gives access to both the connector as well as the headphone jack.
One thing I noticed is that the ambient light sensor of the iPod touch gets covered by the casing, thus rendering the auto-brightness setting a run for its money. Also, the casing does affect the ability to type properly, especially the keys on the side. If you answer a lot of emails, you would probably want to take the device out of the casing on certain occassions. I do so when I play games that requires access to the entire screen.
Worth mentioning is the inclusing on a slide out mirror that slides away inside the top flip cover – useful for the ladies, but the guys might want to take that out and utilize the free slot to slip in some credit cards.
Next up, let’s look at the Leather Style Protective Case. This one’s not leather but its made from something called alternative to leather material, so its a little cheaper, not to mention, easier on the cows too and provides the exact same stylish protection as the Aluminium Lined Leather Case. It comes with four colour selections – Black, Brown, Pink and Red.
Using an internal pouch system, the iPod touch fits firmly in the case thru the use of two metal runners on the side. The metal runners are properly lined with the same alternative to leather material, so it won’t scratch the sides of the iPod touch. I’d say that a large bulk of this casing comes from the metal runners itself – as you can see from the comparison picture provided here.
I found the casing to be a little resistive when trying to slip my iPod touch between the metal runners. Perhaps it’s because of the invisibleSHIELD that I have on my device. Otherwise, the device stays snugly once it is in.
Beyond that, this casing gives more exposure to the screen when compared to the aluminium lined version. The Proporta branding is embossed onto the top cover. Now, speaking of the top cover, missing in this casing is the sheet of aluminium that the aluminium lined version proudly touts.
Aside to the difficulty in fitting the device into the casing, I came to realise that the two slots provided on the top cover failed to meet its design purpose. Credit cards go in but never come out, unless you use some force to pull it out from the tight spot. A little cut-out here would be useful.
Overall, I’m quite pleased with both casings and will continue to be utilizing them to protect my precious device from the daily risks of scratching and the occasional bumps. The Aluminium Lined Leather Case is going to be one casing that will turn envy heads your way the moment you pull it out from your pocket, the Leather Style Protective Case depicts the great taste and style of its owner while protecting the device at the same time.
One more thing. If you noticed, the packaging for both cases are included in the photos. Least saying, this is by far the best packaging I’ve seen so far for an accessory product. Each packaging is magnetic and includes a tiny tag of Proporta’s corporate logo on the sides. This siginifies a lot about Proporta’s dedication to delivering great customer experience and high quality products to their customers. Did I mention that the delivery package came with a pack of English Breakfast Tea as well?
