You know the usual news reports saying that people get bored with their iPhone apps and games, not coming back for a second time, or perhaps a third? Not so with Pocket God by the creative minds at Bolt Creative.
Pocket God is more of an open activity application rather than a game – you get to interact with a bunch of cute little pygmies who happen to be stranded on an island (ala Lost minus the hostilities) in a very funny and sometimes mean way. What kind of God will you be? In Pocket God’s case, you’d obviously wanna become a vengeful one.
Bringing new life into the stranded island is as simple as tapping the always-visible plus sign on the upper left corner. You can have up to six primitives at any one time – and they all looked the same. I’d wish for more primitives though, say about ten? Once you have life on your island, you may start practising your newly-found Godly-skills. Flick your finger on any pygmies that gets on your nerve and they’ll fly into the open sea or sometimes into the waiting volcano in the background. Successfully get a few pygmies into the volcano and you’ll start seeing some lava fireworks in your otherwise quiet and boring island. Simple? There’s more.
Aside to interacting with the pygmies (poor them), almost every object in the app can be moved and played around with. See the coconut on the (duh!) coconut tree? Tap on it and it falls to the ground, just like nature intended to. The app says that you can feed the pygmies with the coconut, but you’ll need to first crack it. No, the meteor rock is only useful to practise bowling with. Hint: use your (or the pygmies’) head. Got your funny bone cracking?
Feeling shaky? Then shake your iPhone to generate a seven-on-Richter scale earthquake. In fact, if you tilt your device enough, the pygmies will start pulling the ground as if they are gonna slide off the island – something which will happen eventually if you tilt hard enough. Recently added is a functionality to create a hurricane. Simply swirl your finger around the screen and see those poor pygmies fly!
When you are bored with abusing the pygmies, give them a chance to entertain you. Tap anywhere on the sky and they’ll dance to the rhythm accompanied by some fireworks. Looks like all is not lost and you can still indeed become a benevolent God.
Features in the app can be selectively activated and deactivated. For example, you can easily switch between sunny or stormy weather from the drop down menu atop the screen. Don’t like to see the pygmies dance, then turn that off as well. Aside to switching the weather, I can’t find any reason (within the sadist me) to turn off the other features meant for torturing and abusing the pygmies. *grin*
Earlier in this review, I mentioned that you’ll want to come back for seconds and maybe thirds or fourths. Indeed, developer Bolt Creative continues to update the application, adding more fun functionality with each update. There are already 11 updates to the application, ranging from adding a little storm to putting some jumping sharks. One of the updates, appropriately named “Hi, Dracula!” pays homage to the much popular game, iDracula – Undead Awakening (reviewed here), which Pocket God was competing to hit the #1 in the iTunes Top Paid Apps list. An upcoming twelveth update will allow the pygmies to do some fishing – after all, feeding them with coconuts is not a proper solution for a long stay in the stranded island.
Pocket God is the brainchild of Dave Castelnuovo and Allan Dye. Dave is the one behind the Objective-C coding and initial idea concept – he happens to have a long history in games and interactive development, having consulted companies like Electronic Arts, Sony and also Yahoo! Allan Dye works on the animation and is specialized in E-learning game development.
Get Pocket God from the iTunes Store for only $0.99 a copy. It is currently on the 2nd spot of the iTunes Store Top Paid Apps list, with about 10,000 reviews so far, most of them giving it a 5-star. With its low price and frequent weekly update (subject to the ‘other’ almighty God, which is the Apple App Store’s approval), Pocket God definitely brings a lot of entertainment value. It’s like having a refreshed adventure with every update. Don’t miss it!
One More Thing… I have an extra promotional code from the generous developer. I’m thinking of giving this away to a random someone who drops a comment in the 1st to 10th spot. Tell me why you deserve it and will you be a benevolent or vengeful God. Make sure to leave your correct email so that I can send you the code.

And for that code, I would want it (greedy me). I don’t have something like a creditcard, so i can only have the free things in app store..

Isn’t this game awesome? It’s a great way to relieve stress as well. I thoroughly enjoy turning my iPhone upside down and then tappingvtue plus sign to see the pygmies fly into the air and then fall back ‘up’ into the sky. Even zapping them with lightening while they are caught in the hurricane. Ah, so much fun! I think I’m more vengeful than anything else.

If I’d read this review before buying the app, then.. well, I would have never bought the app. Luckily I bought the app first though; not regretting it.

Greatest application I’ve ever owned for the iPhone. I work in New York City, and on the subway ride home there is nothing better than starting up Pocket God after a stressful day of work. It’s so entertaining and always makes me smile.
To the Pocket God creators… AWESOME JOB!!!! Keep up the amazing work!

I would be a vengeful god, because I also taunt the sharks with random Islanders. I make the Vampire Islander suffer throughout the eclipses. I drag an islander up into the sky….only to let him fall all the way down to the ground. I drown them. Thinking about all these ways make me feel a little mean…hmmm.. maybe I should be a benevelent god. Then I’ll let them sleep peacefully…kill the vampires…and zap the sharks. I change my mind I’m a benevelent god and proud of it!

I love this game because of the constant updates. Keep up the good work!
I think I deserve the code because I anxiously await the coming updates, alert my friends about the coming updates, and spread the world at my school about this game saying it is the best game on the iPod touch.
I would be a vengeful god because of the pygmys annoying dance. They have displeased me so I much now feed them to the sharks!
March 31st, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Since not many people have mentioned this in the top ten i have decided to. I deserve the promo code because I love pocket god. I have one one contest and am in another because I LOVE PG. I would be a vengeful god to evil pygmies and good god to the benevolent pygmies haha if they had different emotions. I love Allan and Dave for making this app and show everyone the new updates each week and tell anyone with a i touch or phone to buy it because it rocks!
March 31st, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Ok…since not many people have done the promo thing I am going to enter for it. I love pg and have loved it since the start. I am eager for every update and I am on the blog or facebook site once to five times a day. I tell everyone about pocket god and the new updates and tell everyone to buy it if they have a touch or iphone. I would be venegeful to the evil pygmies and good to the well behaved ones. That would be like a merit system and I would love it! So I am dedicated to pocket god and thats why I want the promo code…THANKS!
March 31st, 2009 at 5:15 pm
this is definitely worth buying because of all the updates. and it is a great gameish thing.

Hi I’m Kyle. I love pocket God very much. It was my first iPod touch game, and my favorite one. My favorite thing to do is to kill the villagers, so I am a vengeful god. I deserve the promo code becauuse I think Pocket God is awesome and should STILL be #1 in the App store.

This is a great game. I get rid of all my anger when I play this. Just take your anger out on the little guy, harsh but fun as hell. It is the best app I have downloaded
March 31st, 2009 at 5:50 pm
I wanted to add on to what I said, I would be, and am, an evil destructive god. I deserve the promo because I love this app and play it alot. I even got my friends to buy it, yea it’s that good. I’m prob too late to win, but it does not hurt to write my thing on the game anyway. What I would really like to see is the ability to make the tree fall down on the islanders, and then burn it. I also want to have a war with other islands

Hi guys! I don’t want the code because I have the game and love it! I just wanted to tell you guys this is my favorite game. It is so fun and exciting. I have many apps and I can always come to this app and have fun because this Is great. I have one suggestion though. More natural disasters. Like snowstorms, tsunamis, maybe even a whirlpool would be awesome.
Best game ever! Keep up the outstanding, great work.I was really impressed when I git this game.
March 31st, 2009 at 10:41 pm
The game "pocketgod" is an outstanding game for the ipod. How you can feed the islanders, punish, and destory them. It is a great game so I have been tell my buddies and class mates.
I would give this game a 8 out of 5. Welldone to all the people who have been working on this awesome game.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:59 am
I should get the promo code because pocket god is my favorite app of all time (and I have 4 pages of apps). I am a vengeful god because I love striking them with lightning… while hanging upside-down.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:59 am
Love the game! But you guys said the fishing app would be out yesterday march 31 but it’s April fools day(April 1) and there’s no fishing update.just wondering when it will be out?keep up the great work.
April 1st, 2009 at 1:29 pm
I continually play this game and continually check for updates. I would really like to see the occasional visitor show up, give them the ability to make fire with coconut tree wood, have tidal waves, and make the islanders turn on each other. I probably will not get the promotional code, but I would (after you give it out) like to know what it does.
Thank you for a great review of a great game.
