Good day everyone! Let’s hit the iTunes Store for more freebies – today is a Tuesday!
Starting the line-up this week is the Singles of the Week download, Under Control by Parachute. This free track from Charlotte’s own quintet is an early qualifier for summer songs of 2009. Opening with a brief, dual guitar-and-keyboard instrumental exploration, it quickly transforms as infectious piano chords and Will Anderson’s soaring vocals join in to make it an irresistible pop-soul gathering. If you liked this track, then please check out the full album, Losing Sleep (Bonus Track Version).

As expected, Apple released a new version of iTunes, version 8.1 to coincide with yesterday’s new iPod shuffle release.
Apple claims the new version to be much faster and more responsive. Noticeable improvements should occur when – working with large libraries, browsing the iTunes Store, preparing to sync with an iPod/iPhone and optimizing photos for syncing. I hope Apple lives up to the claim – I am feeling the fat of the current version, especially in the Applications tab. I am hitting 300 apps soon and the experience is sluggish at best.
Besides the performance improvements, iTunes 8.1 also includes many other enhancements and bug fixes, some of which are listed below:
- syncing with new iPod shuffle VoiceOver (3rd generation)
- iTunes DJ (previously Party Shuffle) now allows friends to request songs
- Genius sidebar
can now be enabled for Movies and TV Shows seems to be pulled, according to this post over at The iPhone Blog
- improved performance when downloading iTunes Plus tracks
- new AutoFill feature for iPods that are manually managed
- import tracks using the same quality settings as iTunes Plus
- accessibility improvements
- disable iTunes U and the iTunes Store separately using Parental Controls
- security updates
Mac users should also find the accompanying Front Row update if you have a recently released Macintosh computer that can make use of the feature. Besides this, Apple’s Remote software for both the iPhone and iPod touch has also been updated to version 1.2 in order to improve compatibility with iTunes 8.1.
Head over to Apple’s web site to get the new iTunes 8.1 – Mac users can opt to use Software Update to download both iTunes 8.1 and Front Row 2.1.7. Once iTunes 8.1 is installed, head over to the iTunes Store to get the updated Remote application for your iPhone or iPod touch.
Happy iTunes DJ-ing!

Remember this post back when we were still talking about rumors of Macworld and Steve’s absence? Looks like Apple finally revealed what the tagline of ‘even the small talk will be big’ actually means. Too late? Well, it’s never too late as long as it is announced.
Announced today is a new iPod shuffle model, deemed ‘the first music player that talks to you’. Yes, small talk is the tagline.
The new 3rd-generation iPod shuffle is (according to Apple) jaw-droppingly small – in fact, it is just half the size of the previous generation! But the small size doesn’t mean it lacks juice or storage capacity. 4GB is now the new standard allowing up to 1,000 songs. Lacking from the new model is the control buttons – you now use the earphone cord to control.
Yes, the device talks to you! Using the same VoiceOver technology found in Mac OS X, the iPod shuffle speaks your song titles, artists and playlist names, giving you a new way in navigating your favorite music – all this thru the press of a button. Apple stated that VoiceOver will be available only in selected language.
The new iPod shuffle is available in either silver or black finishing and costs just $79. Have a look at the specs here: Tech Specs
Be sure to check back in a few days’ time for deals from our sponsor, MacMall.
