iPhone 3G Unlock Tool Released

Yes, you read that right! If you happen to be one of those lucky Lukes with the iPhone 3G (and if you just got yours from Christmas), then read on. The iPhone Dev team has released the unlocking tool (code name: yellowsn0w) that shall permit the iPhone 3G to work with any carrier.

If you have been following this development, note that contrary to what was posted earlier, the tool does indeed work with the latest firmware version, 2.2, which contains the latest radio baseband.

Things to note before attempting to modify your iPhone 3G:

the unlock tool only works with baseband 02.28.00, which is provided by the recently released firmware version 2.2
the unlock tool is designed as a daemon (background process), thus there’s no GUI
version 0.9.4 has been released which relieves the need for a one-minute delay upon resetting the iPhone
you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone in order to run the unlock tool

Shop iPhone at Apple Store Malaysia

UPDATE: Links are now gone from all the Apple Online Stores mentioned. I guess it will reappear very soon.

This just in from the myMUG forum, a local Mac Users Group which I frequent.

Building the pathway to an iPhone launch in Malaysia is the Online Apple Store. As of this moment, the Malaysian Online Apple Store currently has a “Shop iPhone” under the main navigation menu. The link is alive, but leads to a half-baked store page. Currently, only 8GB and 16GB models are presented. The details page also has a link to http://www.apple.com/my/iphone. Knowing Apple, that’s URL shall bring you to the official Malaysian Apple iPhone page! As of this moment, clicking that link redirects you to the US iPhone page instead.

I dug further and noticed that the “Shop iPhone” link appears across countries where the Online Store was recently launched: Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. All of them point to the same half-baked store page.

Don’t get your hopes up yet, as we still do not see Malaysia (as well as Indonesia, Thailand or Vietnam) under the list of countries where iPhones have been deployed.

But do stay tuned! Seeing that the store gets updated at this time of the year (its just 5 days till Christmas!), I believe Steve Jobs are getting his elves to help bring the iPhone to our shores at the very soonest possible!

iTalk Sync Free Download for Mac and Windows

Griffin Technology has just released a public beta version of iTalk Sync for Windows computers. iTalk Sync is a companion program to iTalk. iTalk Sync for the Mac is also available and requires Mac OS X v10.4 or greater.

iTalk turns your iPhone, iPhone 3G or 2nd generation iPod touch into a high-quality recording device. It’s simple user interface allows you to start/stop recordings, choose sample rates from Good/Better/Best and manage the list of your recordings, all with just one swipe of the finger. Run iTalk Sync to transfers recordings from your iPhone to your computer using a Wi-Fi connection. Recordings are saved in a high-quality AIFF file format that can be played back in iTunes and many other media players, or it can also be converted to MP3 files for easier distribution.

Griffin Technology stated that both iTalk and iTalk Sync are currently free to download and use, for a limited time.

Transfering recordings is as simple as 1, 2, 3:

Launch iTalk Sync on your Mac or Windows computer.
Choose your iPhone (or iPod) from the list.
Your iPhone (or iPod) will display a message asking permission to connect to iTalk Sync. Click Yes.
iTalk Sync will then display a list of recordings saved on that iPhone (or iPod). Simply drag the recording from the list to your desktop or into a folder on your computer to start the transfer process.

Oops… that’s 1, 2, 3 and 4.

iPhone Tethering Coming “Quite” Soon

A post over at MobileCrunch reveals that AT&T Mobility’s CEO, Ralph De La Vega has confirmed that an official way to tether the iPhone will be offered very “soon”. No dates or pricing information were specified. In fact, knowing AT&T, it is assumed that tethering would not be part of the standard iPhone package and will be charged separately.

Tethering is the process of creating a connection from a non-mobile device (e.g. desktop or laptop computers) to another mobile device (e.g. your iPhone), for the purpose of accessing wireless internet by the non-mobile device.

I have done tethering using my previous devices like the Treo smartphones and I generally liked this idea. For mobile warriors, the ability to carry only one device (in this case, the iPhone) that also acts as a modem is a blessing to say the least.

There are quite a number of tethering solutions available for the iPhone. Amongst them, a third-party application called NetShare, which appeared briefly on the iTunes AppStore before it was removed by Apple. If you could recall, that incident generated quite a lot of news in the Apple circle. Other solutions like PdaNet which turns the iPhone into a “true Wi-Fi router”, targets the jailbreaking community. Instructions to use the software is outlined at PdaNet’s website.

I’d love to see a Wi-Fi adapter tethering option. We know that both the iPhone and iPod touch comes with Wi-Fi built-in. Now, wouldn’t it be great if I could switch from tethering using my iPhone’s 3G/EDGE connection to tethering using a Wi-Fi connection when one is available? It would be useful for those whose laptops are not Wi-Fi enabled.

Also, what about those unlocked iPhones? It is said that firmware 2.2 would bring tethering into reality. Does that mean that my unlocked iPhone shall finally be able to do the same too?

iPhone Gets Key-Modded

Some people like the idea of a touchscreen keyboard, while others prefer to have the touchy feeling of typing on a built-in keyboard. You can now have both.

Well, some electrical engineering whiz-kid has just modded his iPhone (other sites are reporting it as the iPhone 3G, I don’t think so) together and fixed an external keyboard which looked like it came from those one of those Psion devices. Add in another little bit of programming whiz, and the results looked quite promising, if your device is jailbroken, that is. More pictures and a video after the break.

Isn’t that great? Now, if only Apple would allow us Bluetooth on the iPhone. And I wonder if it will work on the iPod touch. Let’s hope this develops further. I’d love to see what are the key ‘ingredients’ to get this working. Who knows someday we’ll see this being sold at every Apple accessories store? Or am I dreaming?
