It’s Tuesday again! Let’s head over to the iTunes Store and see what’s available for download, FREE!

Owl City’s Fireflies is this week’s free Single of the Week download. Owl City is the stage name of Adam Young, a Minnesota native plinking out dreamy tunes that meander down clever lyrical sidestreets. Fireflies melds a partly-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-clearing attitude to a trance-pop beat. The result: an invigorating, feel-good electro-pop experience. Young has a bit of Death Cab for Cutie in his vocal timbre that, when pressed up against a synthesized beat, is so effervescent it could levitate Stonehenge. Fireflies appears on Owl City’s latest album, Ocean Eyes. Make sure to check out this album, available now exclusively on iTunes for the next two weeks for just $7.99, once you sampled the free track.

Jaimee Paul comes next with Cry Me A River, this week’s Discovery Download featurette. Southern Illinois native Jaimee Paul grew up singing in church, where she wowed congregations with her spins on classic hymns. On her newest album, Paul reinterprets jazz standards, including Cry Me a River, originally popularized by Julie London. Close your eyes and listen to Paul’s timeless, smoky vocals mingle with tranquil string orchestration and Beegie Adair’s delicate piano playing. Next in the line is this week’s Canción de la Semana download, featuring Ella Es Bonita by Natalia LaFourcade. This week, we take our new love a little bit further and spotlight a track from her new album, Hu Hu Hu. Ella Es Bonita is a bright slice of sunshine pop where Miss LaFourcade comes across like a nouveau folk-singer with a penchant for horns and organic disco-pop. Sorry that I haven’t been posting new articles. I just got myself a new MacBook Pro and am quite attached to moving things from the old MacBook. Meese leads the lineup with Next In Line, the Single of the Week free download. Meese is a Denver-based group that’s ready to send its debut album, Broadcast, out into the world. Meese has a solid, slightly synth-touched rock backbone that drives its songs forward. A mixture of souldful harmonies within rough guitars and electronic textures gives the band a distinct feel. This summer, you can catch Meese on tour with the Fray and Jack’s Mannequin. If you liked this free download, be sure to also check out the full album, Broadcast.

No sign of this week’s Discovery Download (as of this writing), so let’s check out Viviré Para Ti, this week’s Canción de la Semana download by Los Amigos Invisibles. How appropriate that Viviré Para Ti is the Song of the Week just as everybody’s pulling skimpy summer clothes out of storage. The fun Venezuelan group fills a highball tall with cool disco and Latin lounge, topped with a gorgeous vocal one-two punch from Julio Briceño and a special guest, Natalia Lafourcade. Producer Dimitri from Paris gives Viviré Para Ti wings to transcend both language and discotheque eras. Let Los Amigos cool you down as the temperature heats up. Last, but not least – check out this week’s free Music Video of the Week download, featuring Audrye Sessions’ Turn Me Off. Hello, the past week has been a shocking one, with the passing away of big names like Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett. Anyway, let’s move on and check out what the iTunes Store has to offer for us freebies hunters this week.

Ace Hood leads this week’s lineup with his free Single of the Week download, Loco Wit The Cake. A signee to DJ Khaled’s We the Best/Def Jam imprint, Ace Hood is riding the shockwaves from the success of “Overtime” with a brand-new single, “Loco Wit the Cake.” Ace Hood shows off his flamboyant lifestyle (“Spend 30 in the mall/Five cars sitting tall”) over a treacherous Schife beat. “Loco Wit the Cake” reveals that the cards are in Ace Hood’s favor. Next, check out this week’s Discovery Download featuring Leslie Mendelson’s Hit the Spot. Any recording that begins with an old-fashioned walking double bass line already sounds like a winner to us. Add suave yet understated drumming, crisp acoustic guitar comping, and, most importantly, singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist Leslie Mendelson’s spirited voice, and one gets a song that does indeed, as advertised, “Hit the Spot.” The bluesy piano and boozy horns that come in later fortify the song’s adult-pop brilliance, which will make listeners frequently click “repeat.” Support Mendelson – check out the full album entitled, Swan Feathers.

Laberinto is this week’s Canción de la Semana download by Roba. Robert Avellanet spent his youth as a member of Menudo in the late ’80s, and honed his rock skills throughout the ’90s as a part of bands like Euphoria, El Reencuentro, and Los Ultimos Heroes. Now he’s back as RoBA and with a new album, Jet Privado. “Laberinto” is a smooth pop track on the surface, but it rocks with gusto – a blazing guitar kicks the tune off which helps bring RoBA into a new level of rock ‘n’ roll sincerity. Good Tuesday again, everyone! That said, let’s head over to the iTunes Store and see what is in store (no pun intended) for us this week.

Mayer Hawthorne starts this week’s freebies with Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out, this week’s Single of the Week download. Hawthorne’s music is a throwback to a time when sweet, sweet soul ruled the airwaves and solid backbeats were recorded without any digital enhancements. Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out is from the school of Impressions-era Curtis Mayfield or Miracles-era Smokey Robinson — it’s got Hawthorne’s falsetto vocals ruling over a minimal bit of funk (also provided by Hawthorne, who plays all the instruments). Did we mention he’s a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor? If you liked this track, don’t forget to check out his single of the same title, Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out.

Next, Love and Theft features Don’t Wake Me as the Discovery Download for this week. This Nashville group perfectly illustrates the mixture of twang and commercial rock that helps keep country music alive and thriving with a new generation. “Don’t Wake Me” is a cut from Love and Theft’s upcoming World Wide Open album. Members Brian Bandas, Stephen Barker Liles, and Eric Gunderson intertwine their vocals to create excellent harmonies, and there’s a fiddle not too far off in the mix of what’s primarily an uptempo rock ballad with country soul. Don’t forget to check out the group’s EP, also of the same title, Don’t Wake Me.

Fans of Canción de la Semana, check out this week’s free track by Bomba Estereo with the title of Fuego. This Colombian group released its first album in 2007, mixing the electronic sounds booming out of the clubs with more traditional cumbia rhythms. Their newest album, Blow-Up expands on that idea by integrating champeta and bullerengue sounds into the mix and adding more live percussionists to bring the rhythms to the forefront. This new electro-folklorico sound is taken to a high point on Fuego, where vocalist Liliana Saumet lures in the listener with her charismatic energy. Hello people! It’s Tuesday again, so let us all head over to the iTunes Store for some freebies!

Laura Izibor starts this week’s line up with Don’t Stay, the Single of the Week download. Hailing from Dublin, Laura Izibor has a voice that sings up and out over her surroundings, bringing a little bit of sunshine wherever she goes. She represents the new sound of soul music and brings to it a touch of sass and passion that makes her particular style stand out from the pack. The free download, Don’t Stay is a breezy, windswept funk with Izibor shining on the vocals. It’s orchestrated warmly with the intimacy of a Sunday morning church service. Next in the list is Major Lazer with Keep It Goin’ Louder – our Discovery Download feature for this week. Note that the iTunes Store labeled this track with “Parental Advisory”, so be noted. Major Lazer is the dynamic DJ duo of Switch and Diplo, creating a distinct style of future-facing dance music. Diplo and Switch build a feverish pace on “Keep It Goin’ Louder,” chopping up baile funk beats and electro effects, while Nina Sky and Ricky Blaze watch over the packed dance floor doing play-by-play and color commentary. Keep It Goin’ Louder is an example of the collaboration-heavy Major Lazer’s debut album, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do. Check it out.

This week’s Canción de la Semana download features Federico Aubele’s Otra Vez, a track that also features Sabrina Sciubba. Argentine singer/songwriter Federico Aubele has given us two albums of genre-hopping pop – mixing up ambient grooves with tango and hip-hop with bolero. Otra Vez is a track from his third album that squeezes in some exquisitely played acoustic guitar against the moody and luscious electronic backbeat. Assistance on the vocal side comes from Brazilian Girls vocalist, Sabina Sciubba. Check out the full album, Amatoria if you want more from this great artist.

And then, we have this week’s free Music Video of the Week download. This is the first time I am seeing a comedy-genred title. Check out Rodney Carrington’s If I’m the Only One.
